In an article about social engineering an cnet.com Chris
Hadnagy states that he thinks that woman are better at social
engineering. Why? Because "Especially if you get a guy on the phone
and there's a woman saying "Can you help me with this?" What guy is
going to say no to that?" Is this true? Well... maybe, but not for the reasons Hadnagy thinks it is true. Of course, if a guy answers the phone and a female social engineer tries to persuade him to help her, he probably will. But the same goes the other way around. If a female answers the phone a male social engineer will get her to help him. It will become harder if a social engineer talks to a person of the same gender. Then why could this be true? If you are social engineering you'll need communication skills. There is no real difference between types of communication of man and woman, but woman do have an advantage here. Social engineering needs empathy skills. Both sexes have these skills, but somehow woman have more talent for using their empathy than men. This is the advantage. There is no reason that men can develop these empathic skills. For example psychologists and coaches develop their empathy to use them with their clients. Conclusion: there's no real reason why woman would be better at social engineering than men, but men need to work a little bit harder to gain the necessary skills. Of course the type of personality of the person wanting to gain these skills always plays a role in this. |
