How to proof that QA saves money

There's an interesting discussion running on Slashdot. The question asked is how to proof that testing saves money. This is a good question. Not only for testing, but for every quality attribute (like security and maintainability). Proving that an improved quality saves money is an impossible thing to do.

You can keep statistical data of recurring bugs and time spend on problems that could have been prevented. With this data t is possible to give a projection of how much money is saved. Remember: this isn't actual money. Well... it is, but it isn't spend, because the problem was prevented. Quality assurance doesn't save money. It prevents problems from happening and these problems don't cost any money because they were prevented.

Maybe be should look at other busnisses. Better quality is a better customer satisfaction. Less problems to fix is less negative "word of mouth" advertising.
