Privacy: I've got nothing to hide

A often heard statement regarding privacy is: 'I've got nothing to hide.' Most of the times this is a reaction to laws, sometimes regarding the Internet. It's a simple philosophy. You are a good citizen, you're living your life in peace and you're not breaking the law. What do you have to hide?

Actually, this statement doesn't quite hold in issues of privacy. Privacy isn't about hiding, it's about trust and control. You aren't the one that determines your privacy, others, like the government, do it for you. Do you trust these others with all the details of your life? Do you trust them with what they do with these details? And if you trust them now, do you still trust them with these details in a year, 5 years or 10?

By protecting your privacy you're not hiding anything. You are controlling who you wish to tell what about you. Privacy is about the choice on what you want to share and with whom you want to share it with.

The right word may be effective, but no word was ever as effective as a rightly timed pause. - Mark Twain
