A movie for Christmas: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Christmas movies. I hate them... No, I loathe them. There is only one good Christmas movie: Die Hard. But now I've added another movie to the list of good Christmas movies. The movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless MindThis technically isn't a Christmas movie. In summary (spoiler alert!) the movie is about two people who meet each other for the first time and are attracted to each other in a strange way. It turns out that they were in a relationship for a long time, but broke up. Both of them chose to erase the other one from their memory. In the process of erasing this man realizes that also all the good memories will disappear. So he tries to fight the erasing procedure, but fails. In the end the assistant of the doctor sends everyone their dossier and this couple finds out they already dated. Eventually they start dating again, knowing the possible outcome of this relationship.

You'll probably might think: OK... but why on earth is this a Christmas movie??!? Last week I had a discussion with a few colleagues. One of these colleagues asked me that if God is all-knowing, why He doesn't prevent bad things from happening. I told him that if this world would be a world of only positive and good things that I don't want to live here. You can only appreciate positive things as positive in contrast with bad things. You can only appreciate health if you know sickness, life if you know death, etc.

Christmas is the beginning of the eternal God touching our world. He does this through Jesus Christ, the earthly incarnation of God. The story of Jesus shows us every aspect of human life. There is a lot of suffering and pain, especially surrounding the death of Jesus. Is this necessary? Did Christ need to suffer this much? Yes, great forgiveness has a great price. The one can't be there without the other. We cannot erase our sin from our memories and be happy people.

Through Christ we get the chance to start over again. Not by erasing all the bad stuff we do, but by putting it in to perspective. The perspective of His forgiveness. Only this contrast gives us enough appreciation for the greatness of this forgiveness. This is Christmas.
