Home Theology On tolerance and ignorance
On tolerance and ignorance

People in Western Europe thinks that they are really tolerant. Of course there are thing that needs improvement, but generally they are tolerant. Here, in the Netherlands, despite some really intolerant voices, people generally think that they are tolerant. In discussions people often use the argument: "People can do what they want, as long as it doesn't bother me." In my opinion this isn't tolerance, this is ignorance.

Tolerance starts with taking an interest in what moves the other person. What's the reason that this person does what she or he does? If there is some level of understanding, it doesn't matter if it bothers you. You accept it, because you understand that this is important to this other person. If this is not the case, you are able to have a good, funded discussion on the subject. Taking interest in other people is the start of mutual tolerance.

The argument that people can do whatever they want as long as it doesn't bother you, isn't living together. It's ignoring each other. It's living apart. It's ignorance.
