If there is a God, why is there this much suffering in the world? This question is used quite a lot in discussions about faith, religion, atheism, etc. It is a question that is not easy to answer. If there is a God and God is love, why does He let suffering exists.
Mostly I answer that God chooses to let us humans have a free will. If God loves us He can't let us be puppets on a string, for that kind of total control isn't love. Reading The Orthodox Heretic: And Other Impossible Tales, by Peter Rollins, it occurred to met that this isn't the only answer. Maybe it isn't even the correct answer.
The question implies that God is all powerful. And of course He is. The question also implies that God can use his power to correct all the wrongs. And, yes, of course He can. There is a but: but the question also implies a human vision on power. God is above everything, therefore He must control everything. He is the ultimate power and should use this power for control.
God doesn't follow this human structure of power. He is all powerful and He does use His power in this world. God has a preferential option for the poor, the weak, the powerless. There you can find God. Not in visible ultimate correcting power. God chooses to start His revolution with the weak and suppressed.
As Rollins points out the incarnation is a good example of Gods 'reversed power structure'. Christ didn't come as a powerful leader or king. He came into this word as a helpless and poor baby. His death was with suffering. If you seek God and Gods work go help whoever is suffering. God is there as Christ points out in Matthew 25:35:
For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink.
I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home.
And it is also the reason why Paul wrote the following in his letter to the Corinthians (Corinthians 12:10):
That's why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships,
persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
God chooses to be a powerless God. He chooses to help those who are suffering an suppressed. He is there and He shows His power. It's just not the way we humans expect. God works in His own way, not ours.
